A status hearing is set for Friday in the trial of Adam Kaufman, the Aventura developer charged with murdering his wife in 2007 in a case that's garnered national attention after Kaufman's attorney claimed she may have died from an allergic reaction to spray tan.

The trial of Kaufman, accused of strangling his 33-year-old wife, Eleonora, in the couple's home in November 2007, is scheduled to begin Monday.

Kaufman said he found his wife collapsed on a magazine rack in the bathroom after she'd received a spray tan for the first time. During a bond hearing in 2009, his attorney, Bill Matthewman, theorized that Kaufman's wife may have had an allergic reaction to the tanning spray which caused her to fall on the rack.

Prosecutors ridiculed the so-called "spray tan defense" and said there's no evidence that fits that scenario.

Kaufman was charged in the death until 2009. It took the Miami-Dade medical examiner a year and a half to rule Eleonora Kaufman's death a homicide.

Though he was initially denied bail, Kaufman was later allowed to post bond and go home to the couple's two children. He has to wear an ankle monitor and adhere to strict conditions under the terms of his release.
