Guilty Verdict in Brutal Sledgehammer Attack Case

A man charged in a 2011 sledgehammer attack on a Little Havana grocery store clerk was found guilty Friday.

Rodobaldo Sanchez, 53, was found guilty on charges of attempted first degree murder and armed robbery in the attack on Yue Kui Cen.

"We're not recovering but at least we got justice said Cen's wife, Phuong Thuy Ly Cen. "Thank you for the concern, thank you."

The verdict was given after closing arguments were delivered earlier Friday and the jury was given the case in the afternoon.

It took about two hours for the jury to reach the verdict.

Prosecutors said Cen was working behind the counter of Alex's Mini Mart at 501 NW 12th Avenue on Dec. 18, 2011, when he was brutally attacked by Sanchez, who hit him several times with a hammer.

Cen suffered brain damage as a result of the attack and can't speak. He's wheelchair-bound and severely incapacitated.

Throughout the trial, prosecutors showed DNA evidence of a blood-soaked shirt and cap they said Sanchez was wearing during the attack.

Prosecutors said the whole attack was planned and that Sanchez went to the store to steal cigarettes and milk.

A pre-sentencing hearing has been scheduled for March 27. Sanchez could face up to life in prison.
