MLB To Investigate Jarred Cosart for Gambling: Report

Marlins starting pitcher Jarred Cosart will reportedly be investigated by MLB due to gambling accusations

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jarred Cosart will be investigated by Major League Baseball for links to gambling, according to a report from Yahoo.

Screenshots surfaced late Tuesday night that included alleged direct messages from Cosart. In these messages, Cosart's Twitter account is shown discussing gambling. Following the release of the screenshots, Cosart's Twitter account went private before being deleted a short while after.

The fact that MLB is investigating the issue does not mean Cosart is guilty of any wrongdoing. The league would almost certainly review any situation like this regardless of the legitimacy of the source.

Gambling is a serious concern in professional sports and is met with harsh punishment for any that are found involved. In baseball, the most famous name that comes up is Pete Rose. The all-time hits leader was banished from MLB after the league determined he gambled on the sport. Rose has not been allowed to work in MLB in any official capacity and has been barred from entering the Hall of Fame.

The Marlins will likely stay mum on the situation until more is known. The team said as much on Wednesday morning to the Miami Herald.

The young right-hander is set to be a member of the starting rotation to begin the year. Unless MLB finds any wrongdoing, Cosart should be good to go when the season gets underway.

Miami will begin its 2015 regular season on April 6th.
