Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed during a home invasion in Lauderhill early Wednesday, authorities said.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. when at least two men entered an apartment in the 2900 block of Northwest 56th Avenue through the front door, Lauderhill Police Capt. Constance Stanley said.

Stanley said two women and two children under 10 were in the apartment at the time but were unharmed.

Robert S. Mitchell, 35, was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at Broward General Medical Center, Stanley said.

"We're not really certain if they witnessed it or possibly heard it," Stanley said of the children.

Police are searching for at least two men.

"We don't know if they left in a vehicle or on foot but were still trying to determine who they are and identify how many suspects were involved," Stanley said.
