Marlins' Fernandez Strikes Out Dozen in Win

Jose Fernandez struck out 12 Rays on Thursday as the Marlins won the Citrus Series

Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez put together 12 strikeouts to help his team beat the Tampa Bay Rays 9-1 on Thursday.

The 12 strikeouts marked the fourth time this season that Fernandez reached double digits in the category. It was also the 13th time in Fernandez's career that he reached the feat. Ricky Nolasco also had 13 such games in his time with the Marlins and now shares the franchise record with Fernandez.

With the victory, Miami took the Citrus Series 3-1 and won both in St. Petersburg. Miami has now improved its record to 25-22 on the year and remains right in the middle of the National League East race. The Marlins are 15-9 on the road this season which is one of the best records in Major League Baseball.

In addition to his 12 strikeouts, Fernandez allowed only one run in his seven innings of work. The right-hander now has a 2.82 E.R.A and a 7-2 record.

The Marlins scored early and often to back Fernandez with three runs each coming in the second inning and eighth inning. Miami also added two more during the third inning.

Miami powered its way to the win with a pair of home runs. Adeiny Hechavarria homered for the third time this season, while Chris Johnson added his second blast of the year.  Both players had two-hit days and added singles as well.

The Marlins will take on the last place Atlanta Braves starting on Friday. Adam Conley is scheduled to start the series opener.
