Mother, Two Young Children Die in Florida Keys House Fire

A mother and her two young children died in a house fire in the Florida Keys early Sunday morning.

Monroe County Sheriff's officials said the fire broke out shortly after midnight at the home of 46-year-old Robin Ferrer on Ramrod Key, near Big Pine Key. The home was fully engulfed by the time first responders arrived on scene.

Ferrer died in the fire along with her 7-year-old son Roman and 5-year-old daughter Hazel. Ferrer's older son, 18-year-old Jacob Shores, was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center with severe burns he sustained while trying to save his family. Ferrer's older daughter, 19-year-old Courtney Shores,  was uninjured but also attempted to save her family.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the deadly blaze.
