New Nova Business Program Goes Military

New business program at Nova is taught by vets for vets

The Huizenga School of Business at Nova Southeastern University is offering a unique opportunity for military veterans by assisting them from transitioning from military to civilian life.

Many soldiers struggle with the stress of re-entering the workforce during an unpredictable economic climate. That's why Nova created the Veteran's Business Edge program.

"I wish we had something like this when I got out of the military because it would have really helped me," said 28-year-old Fred Roger, a former U.S. Marine.

Roger served two tours of duty in Fallujah in Iraq before returning to Davie in March 2010.

Since then, he's had an internship that turned into a full-time position as director of operations for Dr. G's WeightLoss and Wellness.

Roger is currently working on his master's degree in entrepreneurship at NSU, but plans to sign up for the Veteran's Edge program in July.

"You gain knowledge you wouldn't gain normally, in street life or in military life, because the business world is different," he said.

The entrepreneurship program, which is only open to military veterans, focuses on business training in areas of entrepreneurship, franchise, and sales training; and is taught by vets for vets with real world, hands-on leadership business experience, Nova officials said.

The students in the programs won't be the only vets in the classroom. The teachers will also have a military background to make this unique program more relatable.

"We can relate to what they're going through," Roger said. "We've been there and done that."
