Woman Killed in Pembroke Pines, Suspect in Custody

A man is in custody in connection with the killing of a woman at a Pembroke Pines home Tuesday night, according to police.

Pembroke Pines police said they were called to 2028 North Douglas Road shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday when someone reported a shooting in the area.

They arrived to find a woman dead in the home, according to police. Family members tell NBC 6 she is 20-year-old Janel Hamilton.

According to the family, Hamilton moved to Pembroke Pines last year from London to live with her godmother. They say she was set to start attending school next January.

Witnesses helped police identify 23-year-old Hashim Pew, the son of Hamilton's godmother,  in connection with the shooting. Pew was taken into custody at the scene, police said.

Pew is facing a murder charge and was being held without bond Wednesday, jail records showed. It was unknown if he's hired an attorney.

The family tells NBC 6 that Hamilton was watching television when Pew shot her. Police said the .45 caliber semiautomatic firearm used in the shooting was recovered. The gun had been stolen during a vehicle burglary in central Florida in 2008.

Hamilton and Pew are family friends and Hamilton had been staying at Pew's home, police said.

Police are investigating and ask anyone with information to call the department at 954-431-2200 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
