Sloppy Marlins Drop First Game of Doubleheader

The Marlins were beaten by the Nationals in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader

The Miami Marlins fell to the Washington Nationals 6-4 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Marlins committed three errors in the game in one of their worst fielding efforts of the season. Justin Bour, Derek Dietrich and Marcell Ozuna each picked up an error. All three misplays were of the fielding variety.

Justin Nicolino had the starting assignment in this one and only lasted 4.2 innings. Nicolino who relies on control, walked five in the short stint. The lefty also gave up five hits and his effort consisted of four earned runs.

Washington would add an additional run off Nick Wittgren in the sixth inning. The run given up by the rookie was a home run. This marked the fourth blast allowed by Miami's bullpen in the last two games combined. The Nationals also added a run in the eighth inning which was aided by an error.

After scoring a run in the first inning, Miami added three more with one each in the fifth through seventh innings respectively. The early run came courtesy of Christian Yelich who tallied his fifth home run of the season. Yelich would also double for the tenth time this year.

Jeff Mathis and Derek Dietrich each had two-base hits as well. For Mathis, it was his second double of the year. Dietrich now has six doubles this season and continues to excel as Miami's regular second baseman.

Miami was 3-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Cashing in on just one of those chances could have changed the outcome of the game.

Kendry Flores will be on the mound for the second game which is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.
