The wife and son of a loss prevention officer who was murdered in a Margate Walmart spent the weekend in shock.

"I hear about this, but I never think it would happen to my best friend, my dad," said the man's son, Christian Jhon.

His father, 49-year-old Lewis Jhon, was shot Friday night after police say he tried to stop a shoplifter from making off with $16 worth of T-shirts.

Margate Police said the shooter, 22-year-old Terrell Johnson, was found dead shortly after from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"He took my dad's life for $4 shirts," said Jhon's son. "My dad's life was worth more than that."

Jhon's wife told NBC 6 South Florida that she and her husband were on their way to a get-together when the store called him in for help.

“I heard the shots,” Alexandra Jhon said in Spanish. “Then people started to run, and I started to look for him all through the store."

She said she never imagined someone had just taken his life.

“I love him a lot. He was my everything,” she said.

Meanwhile, Jhon’s son said his life was changed forever after the death of his dad, whom he called his hero.

"That was his job. He always wanted people to be safe. That's all he ever wanted," his son said. "He was a hardworking man, never done nothing wrong. He's just going to be missed a lot. I love him."
