Tamarac Homeowners on Alert for Robber Posing as Handyman

An elderly woman in a Tamarac community said a robber tried to enter her home, posing as a handyman.

Homeowners in a Tamarac community are keeping an eye out for a suspected robber posing as a handyman who tried to talk his way inside an elderly woman's apartment.

The woman, who preferred to go just by Roz, said she came face-to-face with the robber earlier this week.

"I opened up the door, stupidly, and it wasn't my neighbor," Roz said.

The man told her there was a problem with her water pressure and that he needed to go into her house to check it out. Roz suspected he was a fake, and didn't let him in.

"Having seen so many workers around here, you can see whether someone's a worker or not. He was too well dressed," she said. "I knew he wasn't a worker."

Roz said he was wearing a baseball hat, a navy blue shirt with embroidery and plaid pants.

Now, other neighbors are being observant. They want to know who is visiting this Lime Bay community posing as a handyman.

"I've been keeping my eyes open," neighbor Mitchel Shaid said. "I look out my window from my room and if I see anything, I call 911."

While Shaid is a little nervous, his mom said she isn't.

"I have a telephone," mother Muriel Shaid said. "I know to call 911. I'm not afraid of anything."

Roz's 93-year-old husband, who is a disabled World War II veteran, commended his wife for how she handled the would-be robber.

"She's my hero," he said.

Anyone with information on the fake handyman is urged to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
