Teen, 13, Tried Driving Stolen Front-End Loader From Ocala to Fort Lauderdale

Police say a 13-year-old runaway in north Florida stole a front-end loader and began driving down the interstate with the idea of going to Fort Lauderdale.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office says the boy ran away Sunday morning and went looking for a vehicle to steal at a nearby construction company.

The Ocala Star-Banner reports that the boy couldn't find the keys to a Mack truck, so grabbed a front-end loader parked in the company's lot and drove it through a locked gate.

He made it about three miles down the busy I-75 before a Florida Highway Patrol trooper stopped him.

Fort Lauderdale is about 280 miles south of Ocala.

The boy is charged with commercial burglary, grand theft and criminal mischief.
