Travelers Hitting South Florida Roadways, Airports in Record Numbers for Thanksgiving Holiday

People from across South Florida and around the country are hitting the roadways or heading to the airport for what is expected to be one of the busiest holiday travel days ever.

At Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, officials advised travelers to be prepared for possible delays – with nearly 240,000 people expected to pass through both airports on Wednesday.

Some travelers are getting to the airports up to four hours before their flight in anticipation of long lines with parking, checking in and getting through security checkpoints.

"It's crazy," said Linda McCulley, who had a 9:30 a.m. flight to Los Angeles. "I wasn't thinking," she said, when she planned her return flight from a cruise vacation with her husband for the day before Thanksgiving.

Officials are advising travelers to get to the airport at least two hours before domestic flights and check on the status of their flight before heading to the airport. You can also check on delays using the FAA’s website here and the dubious “Misery Map” here.
