Trio Burglarizes Elderly Man's Condo in Key Biscayne: Cops

A trio of suspects pulled off a tag-team effort, and stole from an elderly man who had left his building for just a few short hours.

Chief of police in Key Biscayne said they're concerned because burglaries there are unusual. In fact, he said they average three to four burglaries a year.

A man on a cellphone was captured on surveillance video in the lobby of the Pyramids Condos. The building manager said he was in the building for at least half an hour before the victim left his apartment.

Key Biscayne Police believe he acted as a lookout, while two other men in baseball caps broke into the unit.

"They pried open the door, pried open the lock," Chief Charles Press explained.

According to the incident report, when the 90-year-old man returned home he saw a rag hanging on the door and also noticed his door was slightly open.

"The rag was in place to cover up what was a forced entry into the apartment," Chief Press said.

The man also told detectives his master bedroom was ransacked. The thieves made it out with $3,000 cash and about $3,600 worth of jewelry.

"They broke down the lock, and they come in. They went to the bedroom and it was a mess. It was a mess," said Humberto Cedeno.

"Of course he's shaken up. We're shaken up because anything of this nature when it involves especially elderly victims is of paramount concern to us," Chief Press said.

Police now want the public to take a close look at the three men who they believe are responsible for the Aug. 14 burglary in broad daylight. It appears they took off in a white SUV.

"Our concern is where there is one, there could be others. And obviously until they're caught we consider them high risk," said Chief Press.

If you know recognize these men, you're urged to call police immediately.
