A water scare Southwest Florida has some residents worried.
The concern was discovered Tuesday afternoon when people along the creek at Manuels Branch in Fort Myers found the water had turned blood red.
Initially, the cause was believed to be pollution, but it actually came from a local water treatment company performing tests. The company used a red dye to check for leaks in the cooling towers at a local hospital.
After testing, company workers discharged the colored water into a drain pipe, which then made its way back to the creek.
While the color is concerning, both the hospital and treatment company insist that the dye is harmless to the environment and any wildlife.
The drain pipe has since been plugged and cleaning is now underway.
The Department of Environmental Protection said that are also keeping a close eye on the cleanup.
