Wyclef Going “Face to Face” With Presidential Campaign

Musician officially declared his bid for the Haiti presidency Thursday

Wyclef Jean hopes his global popularity will help him make Haiti a world power and he will get a chance to test that theory as he officially declared to run for president of the island nation Thursday.

Jean made the rumors official in an interview with a Miami radio station early this morning, according to the Miami Herald.

The presidential campaign will be one of the most talked about in the world, let alone Haiti, as the musician tries to make the jump from influential music artist to political leader.

Jean said his campaign slogan will be "Face to Face," which is the same as a youth movement in Haiti.

"For the 250,000 people who died in the earthquake, that's the reason we ought to see a change in the system," Jean reportedly said during the radio interview.

Haiti's presidential election is Nov. 28 and candidates won't officially be qualified until Aug. 17.

As part of his efforts to run a transparent campaign, Jean is stepping down as CEO of his own charity, Yele, based in Miami, the Herald reports.

That could diffuse some of the backlash of allegations that he used monetary donations to the organization to pay salaries instead of helping the Haitian people during the aftermath of the January earthquake that hit Port-au-Prince.

"I am not stepping down in my commitment to Haiti. On the contrary, regardless of what path I take next, one thing is certain: My focus on helping Haiti turn a new corner will only grow stronger," Jean said in the statement.

Jean is also expected to make an announcement on Larry King Live tonight.
