Anthony DeSclafani Suspended Three Games

Marlins pitcher Anthony DeSclafani was suspended for three games on Friday for throwing at Carlos Gomez

Anthony DeSclafani was suspended for three games on Friday by Major League Baseball for throwing at Carlos Gomez a day earlier.

MLB ruled that DeSclafani intentionally hit Gomez in the seventh inning following a bench clearing incident in the fifth. Things were heated between the Marlins and Milwaukee Brewers after Mike Fiers hit two Marlin hitters in a row. The first being Giancarlo Stanton who is likely done for the season with facial fractures. Reed Johnson was hit in the hand with the next pitch.

The pitch from DeSclafani hit Gomez in his elbow pad and he took first base without incident. Homeplate umpire Jeff Kellogg immediately tossed DeSclafani along with bench coach Rob Leary who was serving as a manager. It was two innings after warnings were issued to both teams but an ejection is not automatic. Kellogg believed it was a purpose pitch and not just a ball that got away from the prospect.

DeSclafani has appealed the suspension which means he can continue playing until his appeal is heard. While it is unlikely that the suspension will be lifted, it may be reduced to only two games in the end. The 24-year old was also fined an undisclosed amount.

Fiers was also fined for his role in the fifth inning incident when he motioned to the Miami dugout. He was not suspended however and was also not ejected from the game. He did not throw another pitch however because skipper Ron Roenicke went to his bullpen in the sixth inning.

With expanded rosters in September, the Marlins will not be short on arms if and when DeSclafani misses time. It still will take valuable big league game action away from the right-hander though who is vying for a roster spot in 2015.

The Marlins will open a series in Philadelphia on Friday evening with their Wild Card hopes looking bleak.
