‘Canes Set Chicago Date With Notre Dame

Now all we need is Russell Maryland put into a hot tub time machine.

If you've been waiting years for a chance to scream "Where is your Touchdown Jesus now?" at a Notre Dame football fan, you're one step closer today: sources have confirmed Miami and Notre Dame will resume their storied rivalry with an October 6, 2012 game at Soldier Field in Chicago.

The answer will no doubt come meekly: "Back in South Bend." And then it will be followed by rematches at Notre Dame on Oct. 8, 2016, and in Miami Nov. 25, 2017.

That's right: it's "Catholics vs. Convicts" again, though it's debatable which side is which these days and no player on the field is old enough to have watched the infamous rivalry games of 1988-'90.

Like we bringin' '88 back

But fans will remember, oh, they'll remember, even as they rush out right now to pad their best area high schoolers in bubble tape and explain the long and hate-filled history in excruciating detail.

There was the day that turned the lopsided Irish gimme game into a soup of hatred punctuated by pink hearts, yellow moons, orange stars, and green clovers, a 58-7 win by the 'Canes in 1985 that waved goodbye to outgoing Irish coach Gerry Faust with only a middle finger.

The 1988 game for which a Notre Dame student printed up "Catholics vs. Convicts" t-shirts and the Irish won by a single point.

The 1989 Hurricanes victory with its incredible 3rd-and-43 conversion, a game that ended ND's 23-game winning streak and led Miami to a national title.

Russell Maryland. Jimmy Johnson's hair. Lou Holtz eating grass, and determining that it was delicious.

Oh, and the fighting. Beautiful, beautiful brawls, the likes of which we'd see at least a few more times from the 'Canes before Randy Shannon clenched them out of existence for the begrudging (our word) better.

And now it's back. So polish up your short green people slurs, Miami, and purchase those plane tickets: if it isn't going to be the same on the field, it certainly will be in the stands.
