Latest Mason Dixon Poll Shows Race for Florida Governor Nearly Even Between Andrew Gillum, Ron DeSantis

What to Know

  • Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum holds a one point lead over Republican candidate Ron DeSantis 45 to 44 percent among likely voters.
  • The poll’s results show Independent voters will likely decide this race – as each candidate got 41 percent of the vote.

With the one month marking nearing to when Florida voters will elect the state’s next governor, the latest Mason-Dixon poll has the race as a dead heat between the top two contenders.

In the poll, conducted last week with the results released Tuesday, Tallahassee Mayor and Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum holds a one point lead over Republican candidate Ron DeSantis 45 to 44 percent among likely voters – well within the 3.5 percent margin of error in the poll of the 815 people surveyed.

DeSantis, a former U.S. Representative from Jacksonville who rode the support of President Donald Trump to an upset win in the primaries, hold a comfortable lead in the poll among voters over 65 years of age, white voters and male voters as well and those in North and Southwest Florida and registered Republicans.

Gillum, who also pulled off an upset win in the primary and would be the state’s first black governor if elected, has a sizable lead in Southeast Florida as well as among voters under 35 years of age, black and Hispanic voters and female voters.

Several areas of the state and voting groups remain a tossup. Gillum holds leads in the Tampa Bay area and among voters 35 to 49 years of age while DeSantis has a slight edge in Central Florida and among voters 50 to 64 years of age with all results being within the margin of error.

The poll’s results show Independent voters will likely decide this race – as each candidate got 41 percent of the vote from those polled with 14 percent saying they are undecided.
