‘Canes Fans Optimistic After Suspensions

Fans on campus said they remain hopeful about their football season

‘Canes fans on campus Wednesdsay said they remain hopeful about their football season.

“It’s sad that that had to happen,” said student Lea Johnson, speaking of the suspensions. “At least they’ll get to play.”

Graduate student Sheng Yi hopes people are paying attention in Coral Gables and across the nation.

“I think it’s a strong punishment,” she said of NCAA’s suspending of eight players. “I guess they will learn from it and other people will learn from it too.”

Derek Centola thinks the season will still go well.

“Canes fan,” he said simply. “You gotta believe you know.”

University of Miami senior Alex Goldklang says she tutors freshmen football players.

She explained the suspension situation to her roommate on their way to class.

“I think everyone’s ready for their teammate to be missing and they’ll rise to the occasion,” said Goldklang. “We’ve definitely come together more as a team. And I’ve seen the freshmen players not be phased by the whole thing, like they’re still committed as if this hadn’t happened.”

Wednesday morning players practiced mostly out of sight, and not everyone agreed the suspensions were the right call for allegedly taking prohibited benefits.
