Stanley said two women and two children under 10 were in the apartment at the time but were unharmed.

Robert S. Mitchell, 35, was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at Broward General Medical Center, Stanley said.

"We're not really certain if they witnessed it or possibly heard it," Stanley said of the children.

Police are searching for at least two men.

"We don't know if they left in a vehicle or on foot but were still trying to determine who they are and identify how many suspects were involved," Stanley said.
