A teen has died after he was shot in the head in northwest Miami-Dade Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

15-year-old Johnny Lubin was taken to Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition after the shooting at Northwest 14th Avenue and Northwest 77th Street, Miami-Dade Police said.

According to investigators, Lubin was walking home from school when an unknown vehicle approached him shortly before 4 p.m. Shots were fired and the teen was struck.

"We don't know if the shots came from the vehicle or from someone walking on the sidewalk. We do know a vehicle approached the juvenile when the shots were fired," said Jennifer Capote with MDPD.

Lubin later died in surgery, police said. He was a freshman at Miami Northwestern Senior High School. He is the fifth Northwestern student injured in gunfire this year; he's the third to be killed.

Alberto M. Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, tweeted about the shooting: "The heartbreak continues in Miami with another teenage life lost to cowardly, murderous bullets. Enough of the senseless code of silence."

Officials said grief counselors would be at the school on Thursday.

A motive is unknown, and no arrests have been made. Police have not released suspect or vehicle descriptions.
