$15,000 Worth of Birds Stolen From Homestead Home

A Homestead family is hoping the public can help after dozens of pricey birds were stolen from their home early Thursday.

About 150 birds worth about $15,000 were taken from the home on Southwest 161st Court sometime around midnight.

Surveillance video showed two men in the backyard, opening the bird cages and taking the birds away in a matter of minutes.

Elizabeth Mirabal said her father makes a living off the birds.

"They came in and opened this one and took everything that was worth the most, the blue birds and exotic ones that cost the most," she said. "I felt bad for my dad because this is his business, that's how he earns money and it breaks my heart."

Homestead Police are aware of the theft but the family hopes someone comes forward. Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
