17-Year-Old Shot on Way Home From School: Miami Police

He is in critical condition at Jackson Memorial, police said

A 17-year-old boy was shot multiple times as he was walking home from school at Northwest 10th Avenue and Northwest 62nd Street Thursday, Miami Police said.

The teenager is in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center after the drive-by shooting, police said. His name is Brandon Allen, family members told NBC Miami at the hospital.

Allen was walking home with his cousin from Miami Northwestern Senior High School on NW 71st Street when the shooting happened, his family said. They were part of a group of young people who were shot at multiple times after several black males drove up in a vehicle whose make and model are not known, police said.

The suspects took off right after the gunfire, and the motive remains unclear, police said.

Allen's bloody handprints are visible on a wall where the shooting took place.

“He’s just a normal, sports-active kid. Not a flashy kid,” his brother Willie Calhoun said. “Video games was his thing. That was his interest.”

His stepfather, Robert Lee, said Allen plays basketball and football.

"He's an outstanding child. Very athletic. I don't know what this came from," he said.

Police ask anyone with information on this incident to call the Miami Police Department's Homicide Unit at 305-603-6350 or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
