3D TV Warnings Not as Scary as They Sound

Samsung warns of health dangers from too much 3D TV, UM Doc says risk is minimal

3D is all the rage these days, at the movies and now, thanks to 3D televisions, at home, too.

But before you put on those funny looking glasses, Samsung has a health warning. The Samsung 3D TV owner's manual says viewers may experience dizziness, headaches or loss of awareness and warns that you're more prone to these symptoms if you're pregnant, in bad physical condition, are sleep deprived, have been drinking alcohol, or suffer from seizures.

"These are extremely small risks of these things happening in my opinion," said Dr. Thomas Sick, a professor of neurology at the University of Miami.

Dr. Sick said he can see how 3D viewing might affect someone prone to motion sickness, since watching 3D TV makes you focus on moving objects, but he said the overall impact on your health is minimal.

"It would be hard to imagine that it would cause major health risks from what we know about the technology," said Dr. Sick.

Some of the warnings in Samsung's owners manual, which can also be found on its website, seem a little over the top. For instance: "Do not place your television near open stairwells, cables, balconies, or other objects that may cause you to injure yourself."

Samsung's response to Internet chatter about these warnings is basically---use common sense. A statement released to NBCMiami said, "Samsung TVs are safe. When used properly and instructions and advisories are followed, 3D functions should not pose adverse health or safety risks."

"It sounds like they're trying to cover all possibilities," said Dr. Sick. "Not having any background to investigate the effects of 3D."

Samsung is the only 3D TV maker that's posted such a warning.
