SENATE SETS UP 'PARENT TRIGGER' FOR FINAL VOTE
The Florida Senate is ready to cast a vote on a hotly contested bill to give parents a vote on turnaround options for failing public schools. Senators on Monday discussed the "parent trigger" bill. The House already has passed its version of the bill.
FLORIDA GOVERNOR MAY WIN APPROVAL OF TAX CUT
Florida Gov. Rick Scott could wind up winning support for his top legislative priorities this year. Scott announced Monday that legislative leaders have agreed to a three-year elimination of sales taxes charged on equipment bought by manufacturers. The governor has hammered away for weeks on the need for the tax break.
EX-CUBAN SPY OFFERS TO RENOUNCE U.S. CITIZENSHIP
A convicted Cuban spy has offered to renounce his U.S. citizenship if a judge will allow him to serve his probation in Cuba. Rene Gonzalez was allowed to visit Cuba following his father's death and is expected back in the U.S. on May 6.
STUDENTS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AFTER BUS CRASH
Officials say 12 middle school students have been taken to four hospitals after a car rear-ended their school bus in Opa-locka Monday morning. A school district spokesman says the none of the injuries were serious.
WOMAN SHOT, KILLED BY POLICE OFFICER
St. Petersburg police fatally shot a 53-year-old woman during a welfare check on her. A neighbor reported she'd been acting strangely on Sunday. When police arrived to check on her, she pointed a revolver at one of the officers, who shot her.
DISTRACTED DRIVING VIDEO
A grass-roots public service campaign targeting distracted drivers will be unveiled at Boyd Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes. Just Drive was developed by Boyd Anderson High School’s International Baccalaureate film students to take the texting and driving awareness effort to a new level. The initiative is one of several partnerships between Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue and Boyd Anderson High.
