Bank Robberies Up In South Florida: FBI

Authorities said bank robberies in South Florida are up 25 percent so far this fiscal year

Bank robberies in South Florida are on the rise, and by the end of September there will be almost 100 such crimes committed, if the current pace continues, the FBI said Tuesday.

For the first half of the 2012 fiscal year, 49 bank robberies were carried out. This is a 25 percent increase from the last year. During 2011, there were 75 robberies in total, down from 87 the year before.

Approximately half of the robberies this year have been solved, and the FBI would like the public to give them any information they have on any of the robberies.

“The majority of the unsolved cases are non-violent bank robbers who commit what we call ‘one-on-one robberies," said FBI Supervisory Special Agent David Beall, who leads the South Florida Violent Crime/Fugitive Task Force.

The task force is made up of police forces from South Florida.

On Tuesday there was yet another bank robbery, this time in Surfside. The suspect, entered the Amtrust Bank at 9592 Harding Ave, walked up to the teller with a bag and said "give me all your money," police said.

The bank teller gave the money and the men left the bank with the money. The suspect was arrested as he got in his car in the back of the bank. The cash was recovered.
