A former starter for the FIU Panthers football team was killed in an early morning car crash in Miami-Dade.
The football team confirmed that defensive back Emmanuel Lubin passed away after the crash around 4 a.m. Sunday along the Florida Turnpike.
According to Florida Highway Patrol officials, Lubin was driving northbound around NW 74th Street when he lost control of his Toyota sedan and collided with a guardrail.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue declared Lubin dead at the scene. An early investigation determined he was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
A graduate of North Miami Beach High School, Lubin played in 45 games for the Panthers over four seasons that included starting all 13 games during the 2018 season that ended with a victory in the Bahamas Bowl.
“He was a hard worker, great teammate and was respected and loved by his teammates, coaches and staff at FIU. His character, work ethic and leadership were instrumental in leading our program to success these past two seasons,” FIU head coach Butch Davis said in a statement. “Our football program is mourning his loss and we will honor Emmanuel every day moving forward. “

Lubin was pursuing a liberal studies degree from FIU while working toward a professional football career. His brother, E.J. Biggers, played for the NFL’s New England Patriots while his step brother Louis Delmas played for both the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions.
