Steve Bateman, the former mayor of Homestead convicted of corruption in 2014, on Tuesday surrendered to begin serving a 22-month sentence.
A judge had sentenced Bateman in December 2014 to 22 months in jail following his conviction of criminal charges related to him doing business as a consultant with a private company and getting paid while at the same time getting paid to serve as the mayor of Homestead.
Bateman also accepted a plea deal on two misdemeanor charges out of seven for illegal campaign expenditures in 2015 to which he was sentenced to 18 months of probation.
The former mayor had been out on bail pending an appeal that was rejected in December.
