Rising Rent Forcing Wilton Manors' Good Luck Cat Cafe to Close

For the past two and a half years, the Good Luck Cat Cafe in Wilton Manors has helped almost 200 felines find a forever home.

The adoption center, situated inside Boomerangs Thrift Store, is meant to look like a living room to help the cats get comfortable with potential owners. The center -- which also serves coffee and snacks for human consumption -- houses up to 10 cats at a time and holds onto them indefinitely until they're adopted.

Unfortunately, the days are numbered at Good Luck Cat Cafe.

Boomerangs is closing due to rising rent, so now the cafe either needs to find and pay for a place of its own, or find another business to adopt them by May 18.

"It's been a real struggle, it's heartbreaking, we have loved to be here and we love Boomerangs, so we're heartbroken that they're closing," said Ellen Sukenik, a volunteer.

Volunteers say they finally feel ingrained in the community, and now they're being forced to leave.

"Just working with the cats and the fact we have so much momentum right now, the thought of closing is not something we even want to think about," Sukenik said.

Good Luck Cat Cafe has set up a GoFundMe to raise money for a new space.
