A judge ruled Thursday that the teen charged with fatally shooting a 13-year-old girl on a Homestead school bus will be released from juvenile detention and placed on home detention with an electric monitor.
Jordyn Howe, 15, faces charges of manslaughter and carrying a concealed firearm in the November incident that killed Lourdes Guzman-DeJesus. Prosecutors plan to try him as an adult. He did not appear in court on Thursday, but the victim's mother did.
"It's not easy. I'm just trying to cope day by day. I'm going day by day," said Ady DeJesus.
Funeral Held for Victim in School Bus Shooting
According to the arrest form, the children were on their way to school on the private bus when the boy took the firearm out of his backpack and displayed it. The gun went off, hitting Guzman-DeJesus as the bus was in the area of Southwest 296th Street and Southwest 137th Avenue.
Guzman-DeJesus, a student at Palm Glades Preparatory Academy, was was taken to Miami Children's Hospital, where she later died.
"What we know is the kid had brought the gun to school more than once. Who's responsible? That child's responsible. He should be tried as an adult because he's 15 years old and that's what the law provides," said Ron Book.
