Identical Twins Share Top Honors at FIU Graduation

Success Story Behind FIU Twin Sister Graduates

Twin sister graduates are setting the kind of record South Florida has never seen before. NBC 6's Julia Bagg has the success story behind FIU's computer science whizzes at the top of their class. (Published Monday, May 9, 2016)

Shonda and Shalisha Witherspoon don't just look alike. The 25-year-old identical twins shared top honors in their graduating class at Florida International University in Miami.

They also became the first in their family of six children to graduate from college, earning bachelor's degrees in information technology on Monday. Their GPAs? A matching 3.95.

The Miami Herald reports the twins plan to pursue graduate degrees from FIU.

When they arrived at FIU, the twins tried to go their separate ways. Homeschooled, it was their first time alone. But they ended up together again because of their mutual interest in Japanese art known as anime and computers.

They spent six weeks in Japan on a study-abroad program and have become recruiters for students of color to participate in similar programs.
