Lauderhill Firefighter Dies From Injuries Sustained in Off-Duty Boating Accident

Firefighter Joshua Schwabenbauer, 26, died as a result of injuries sustained during an off-duty boating accident on Labor Day

The Lauderhill Fire Department announced the death of one of its own members Thursday.

Firefighter Joshua Schwabenbauer, 26, died as a result of injuries sustained during an off-duty boating accident on Labor Day. He was a five-year veteran of the department and had also served as a lifeguard for the City of Lauderhill and the City of Pompano Beach Fire Rescue.

“During his short career with us, Josh was able to touch many lives, both at work and in the community that he so proudly served,” the Lauderhill Fire Department said in a statement.

On Monday, Schwabenbauer was boating in Haulover Beach when he suffered a head and spinal cord injury. Two other off-duty firefighters performed CPR after he was found in the water by a bystander and pulled onto a boat.
