Man Posed as Window Contractor, Scammed Woman: Police

A South Florida man was behind bars after he allegedly posed as a window contractor and scammed a woman of her money.

Niraj Sethi, of Oakland Park, faces multiple charges including falsely identifying as a contractor and grand theft from a person 65 years of age or older, according to an arrest form.

"I trusted him," said Margaret Dorman. "My neighbor recommended him and he thought he did such a good job."

Dorman hired Sethi back in July when she needed some hurricane windows. Sethi told her he worked for Fort Lauderdale-based BnT Services Inc., where he was employed once before.

"But not at the time when she talked to him," said Tom Zeschke of BnT. "When she called us, she thought she bought the windows from us but we had no record ... he had misrepresented himself."

Dorman gave Sethi thousands of dollars, chose windows with him and even worked out selling him a BMW in the deal. She became suspicious when he couldn't produce paperwork and didn't get anything done.

She called BnT directly, who called police to investigate. Detectives even put undercover equipment in her home to capture Sethi in the act.

BnT guarantees Dorman will get her windows.

"It feels wonderful," she said.

Sethi remains in jail without bond. Attorney information wasn't immediately available.
