Miami Schools Superintendent Says Flight Diverted Due To Smoke

Miami-Dade County Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho was on board a flight from Tallahassee to Miami Thursday that had to make an emergency landing.

According to Carvalho, after the plane took off from Tallahassee, a loud explosion was heard and then there was smoke.

Carvalho said the plane was American Airlines flight 3454. He also said the flight took off after a lengthy maintenance delay in Tallahassee.

Congressman Mario Diaz Balart was also on the flight.

The flight was diverted to Tampa and landed safely around 9:15 p.m. Thursday. Carvalho is expected to arrive in Miami early Friday.
