Police Investigate Fatal Shooting of FSU Professor

Officers were called to Markel's home Friday morning and found the professor with an apparent gunshot wound.

Authorities say no suspects have been identified in the fatal shooting of a Florida State University law professor at his Tallahassee home.

The Tallahassee Democrat reports that College of Law Dean Donald Weidner told faculty and staff that Dan Markel died early Saturday after being "fatally injured in a shooting incident."

Police spokeswoman Tenitris McInnis says officers were called to Markel's home Friday morning and found the professor with an apparent gunshot wound.

Markel died at a hospital. Police say the shooting remains under investigation.

Weidner said the school's "attention is focused on supporting Dan's family and the many members of our community who are undoubtedly shocked and saddened by this tragic turn of events."

A memorial service was planned Sunday at Markel's synagogue.
