Miami Mayor Denied Entry at Texas Border Facility Housing Migrant Children Still Wants Answers

What to Know

  • Miami mayor Francis Suarez is still seeking answers after he, along with other fellow mayors, were turned away at the Tornillo Port of Entry
  • He was a part of a bipartisan delegation of mayors from the U.S. Conference of Mayors who traveled to Texas Thursday

The mayor of Miami was among the group of lawmakers from across the United States that was denied entry to facilities housing migrant children at the border of Texas.

Miami mayor Francis Suarez was a part of a delegation of mayors from the U.S. Conference of Mayors who traveled to the Tornillo Port of Entry Thursday to protest the Trump administration's family separation policy.

When the mayors tried to enter the Port, they were turned away. Only federal officials have been allowed inside the facilities.

"If there's nothing to hide, if the children are well treated, we should know about it," Suarez said.

Suarez shared his concerns over the children's well-being and how quickly they would be reunited with their parents.

"The fact that they will not let the people see what they are doing tells me they they're not proud of it, or they don't know what they're doing," said Jenny Durkan, the mayor of Seattle.

Melissa Martinez told NBC6 she is working with a labor justice committee to reunite two teenagers who were separated from their parents while trying to cross the border.

"They were put into these tent cities, and they don't know what's going to happen next," she said. "They're in limbo."

On Wednesday, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Sen. Bill Nelson were also denied entry to a detention center for migrant children in Homestead. The same day, the Department of Health and Human Services released photos offering a look inside the facility.

The photos showed the children's sleeping quarters, dining hall, restroom facilities and of the children reading and learning. So far, federal officials have been the only ones releasing images of the inside.
