Woman Killed When Amtrak Hits Car in North Florida

Authorities say a 34-year-old woman died after ignoring a railroad track crossing signal and getting hit by an oncoming Amtrak train.

The crash happened in Orange Park near Jacksonville on Monday evening.

Sgt. Dylan Bryan told The Florida Times-Union that Eryn Nicole Spiller was the vehicle's sole occupant. She died at the scene.

The 11-car train was pulled by two engines. It carried 262 passengers and had 13 crew members and was traveling from Miami to New York. Bryan says one passenger reported minor injuries.

Bryan says all traffic-control devices were working at the crossing and called the accident ``preventable.''

There have been at least three other recent train crashes caused by people driving around crossing gates. One man died and one was critically injured in those crashes.
