Body of Man Who Jumped Into Lake After Hit-and-Run Crash at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek Found: Police

The body of a hit-and-run suspect who struck a car at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek then disappeared after jumping into a lake to flee the scene has been found, police said Tuesday.

The Broward Sheriff's Office dive team found the body of 34-year-old Steve Teddy Uwanawich in the lake near the casino Monday, Coconut Creek Police said. The medical examiner identified the body on Tuesday.

The incident happened around 1:40 a.m. Wednesday at the parking garage of the casino at 5550 Northwest 40th Street when a silver Lexus crashed into a parked vehicle then collided into two walls, police said.

Uwanawich, and his 15-year-old son, were in the Lexus and fled the scene, police said. They jumped into a lake north of the casino and tried to swim across, officials said.

While police were searching for the two, the teen approached an officer and told him his father didn't make it across the lake and may have drowned, police said.

Dive teams searched the lake but found nothing until Monday.
