What to Know

If you’re waking up smelling smoke across South Florida Monday, it’s because several small brush fires have broken out across the area – but officials have not said that anyone is in danger at this time.

A half dozen blazes have been reported by Florida Forestry Service – including one in Southwest Miami-Dade west of Krome Avenue in Homestead along with another between Marathon and Key West to go along with three reported fires in Collier County and another north of Fort Myers.

So far, no evacuations or road closures have been announced and officials have not released any additional information about the fires.

One of the main reasons for the recent fires is the drought like conditions across the area, with Miami currently four inches below the average rainfall totals for this point in the year and Fort Lauderdale just under six inches below normal.

Portions of Miami-Dade, Broward and Collier counties remain under severe drought conditions as a result.
