Cuban Man Who Stowed Away on Miami Flight Granted Political Asylum

Yunier García Duarte said he feared for his life if the U.S. deported him back to Cuba.

The Cuban man who stowed away on a flight from Havana to Miami has been granted political asylum.

Yunier García Duarte, who worked as a baggage handler at José Martí International Airport, was found in the baggage cargo area of a Swift Airlines flight that landed at Miami International Airport back in August.

Duarte said he feared for his life if the U.S. deported him back to Cuba.

He has been held at Miami-Dade County's Krome Detention Center since then.

Immigration lawyer Willy Allen confirmed Duarte's asylum on Tuesday.
