One motorcyclist was killed and another was severely injured in a crash on Interstate 95 in Fort Lauderdale that caused major traffic backups Thursday morning.

The crash happened around 3 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-95 near Sunrise Boulevard.

Florida Highway Patrol officials said a man on a 2020 BMW motorcycle was on the highway when his bike went down for unknown reasons.

The man was thrown from the motorcycle and was run over by unknown vehicles, FHP officials said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman who was on a 2019 Yamaha motorcycle and who was also on the highway struck the BMW motorcycle and was thrown to the ground, and suffered severe leg injuries, officials said.

After the collision, the BMW motorcycle became engulfed in flames.

Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed the two damaged motorcycles at the scene. One was on a tow truck and the other appeared to be destroyed in the middle of the highway.

A yellow tarp covering the victim was visible on the side of the road.

Officials haven't released the identities of the victims but said the man was 36 and from Tamarac. The woman is 43 and from Pompano Beach.

The crash left a section of I-95 northbound closed for several hours while authorities investigated.

The investigation is ongoing.
