Keys Release Video Displaying Recovery From Irma With Help From Legendary Singer Gloria Estefan

As the Florida Keys continue their comeback from the devastation of Hurricane Irma, officials released a video showcasing their efforts – with the help of legendary South Florida musician Gloria Estefan.

The artist donated use of her hit song “Coming Out of The Dark”, written in the wake of a 1989 tour bus accident that almost claimed her life, for a video depicting how the area was devastated by the storm as well as the resilience and spirit that has allowed the island chain to begin a return to normal.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with our neighboring Keys family,” said Estefan through Frank Amadeo, president of Estefan Enterprises, in a statement released by the Monroe County Tourism Development Council. “We just want the song to inspire others to help.”

MCTDC media relations director Andy Newman said some areas received minimal damage, while others will be recovering for quite some time.

"Given that tourism is the Keys’ top revenue generator and 50 percent of the labor force is employed in visitor-related jobs, it’s crucial to motivate visitors to experience the Keys -- but without hampering ongoing recovery," Newman said.
