Urban Beach Weekend Brings Lounging, Littering to SoBe

The giant party weekend on South Beach is about over, with the biggest complaint from city officials being all the litter.

Urban Beach Weekend wraps around Memorial Day and attracts thousands of African American tourists. It's a four-day stretch that has developed quite a reputation.

“South Beach for Memorial Day Weekend is what's happening,” said one reveler from Washington DC. "When you got a lot of naked women you all right.”

Yes, the beach is an attraction, but the nightlife can be even more attractive. Women showed up in some of their skimpiest SoBe outfits and club-hopped into the early morning hours.

For some people, though, the crowds were too big.

“For me, only a good two or three days down here and I'm home,” said one partier from Oakland, CA.

While many clubs and restaurants were packed with people, some merchants found business to be a bit off.

“Business could not even compare to years before,” said Gabriella Arevalo with Atlantic Bar and Grill.

Parking was at a premium, especially at night. Even though no parking signs are posted in the residential areas, people did anyway. Authorities towed almost 500 vehicles over the long weekend.

Litter on the streets, mostly promotional cards for clubs and restaurants, was the number one nuisance said one city official. There are no reports of any major incidents. Police arrested about 350 people - the majority on misdemeanor drug charges.
