NBC Universal, Inc.

A man upset over his ex-girlfriend's new relationship shot her and killed her boyfriend in a North Bay Village apartment while his young daughter was inside, police said.

Jose Aranibar-Camacho, 41, was arrested on first-degree murder, attempted murder and child neglect charges in the Monday morning incident, Miami-Dade Police officials said.

Officers had responded to the shooting around 7:45 a.m. at the apartment building in the 7900 block of East Drive on Harbor Island.

According to an arrest report, when officers arrived they found Aranibar-Camacho walking outside the apartment holding a gun with blood on his hands.

Aranibar-Camacho spontaneously told officers he'd shot his ex and killed her boyfriend in the apartment, the report said.

Video obtained by NBC 6 captured what appeared to be Camacho in handcuffs, as he confessed to the murder in front of police officers.

“I killed my ex's [expletive] boyfriend,” the man can be heard saying on video in Spanish. “…I shot my girlfriend too.”

Officers entered the apartment and found the boyfriend suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was also found shot and was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.

Police haven't released the identities of either victim but family and friends identified the woman as Brittany Springmyer.

Inside the apartment at the time of the shooting was a 2-year-old girl, who wasn't harmed. Police said she is the daughter of Aranibar-Camacho and Springmyer.

"Thankfully the child is OK, and she's fine. It is a very traumatic situation for a child to experience the incident that just occurred, but thankfully, so far she is OK," Miami-Dade Police spokesman Luis Sierra said.

After he was taken into custody, Aranibar-Camacho confessed to shooting the victims, adding that he was angry that his ex was in a new relationship with another man and living with him, the report said.

Aranibar-Camacho told detectives he'd arrived at the apartment two hours before the shooting and waited in his car, the report said.

A man was killed, a woman hospitalized and a person was in custody after a shooting in North Bay Village Monday morning, officials said.

He said he thought he was "going to take the male victim's soul," the report said.

Aranibar-Camacho said he also bought a tourniquet, QuikClot and gauze days before the shooting, in case he became injured and needed them while carrying out the shooting, the report said.

The night before the shooting he wrote a note detailing the planned shooting and apologizing to his family, the report said. Investigators found the note at Aranibar-Camacho's home.

Springmyer's parents said in a statement Tuesday night that the suspect was their daughter's ex-boyfriend and father of her child. The two had been separated for months.

"Our family welcomed Brittany’s new boyfriend to Thanksgiving dinner only days ago. They were so excited about this new phase of their lives," the statement read, in part. "Her ex-boyfriend did this out of pure jealously, an inability to move on and a complete disregard for his daughter’s wellbeing."

Neighbors recalled the sounds of the Monday morning shooting.

“We heard a smaller caliber. Boom, boom, boom. And then there was a pause. And then we heard the louder caliber, which was boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,” said neighbor Krystal Cruz.

Cruz said she witnessed Aranibar-Camacho being taken into custody.

“He didn't run, at no moment. He gave himself up very easily. And he explained to the officer, ‘I shot him,’” she said. “…He said, ‘I killed him and I think I killed her.’”

Neighbors recalled seeing Aranibar-Camacho and Springmyer together at the apartment in past months.

Cruz said she saw Springmyer’s new boyfriend at the apartment complex for the first time in the last couple of weeks.

“I was surprised because this man, like I said, he was very gracious,” said Cruz. “We all thought that the victim was a family member of hers. We didn't know that that was her boyfriend because we never saw them holding hands, kissing or anything like that.”

Aranibar-Camacho was booked into jail where he remained held without bond Tuesday, records showed. Attorney information wasn't available.

His daughter was initially placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Families. Springmyer's parents said she was later placed in their custody.

"Our daughter Brittany is an amazing person, but a mother first. She adores her 2-year-old little girl, and does everything to create the best life for her. She’s also artistic, creative and passionate about her job teaching dance," they said in a statement. "Right now, we are focused on our daughter who is still in critical condition, and our granddaughter is safe in our custody. Our family greatly appreciates prayers for them both.”

Editor's Note: Family members clarified the suspect was not married to Springmyer, as had been stated in the police report. This story has been updated.
