Marlins to Host Hurricanes at Marlins Park

The Hurricanes will take on the Marlins in an exhibition game at Marlins Park on March 27th

The Miami Marlins will host the Miami Hurricanes for an exhibition game at Marlins Park on March 27.

The Hurricanes and Marlins have played several times, but the game usually takes place at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. UM and the Marlins also previously played one another at Marlins Park back in 2012.

This game comes at the end of the Marlins' spring training schedule and right before the regular season opener. This is another twist on the traditional game, as the Marlins usually host the Hurricanes to begin the spring schedule. The later start means the Marlins' Opening Day roster should be on the field for this contest.

Normally this is a game that favors the Marlins, but the story could be different this time around. Even though it is an exhibition game, the Hurricanes figure to play to win. Beating a major league team can be a big moment for the student athletes and this is a potentially winnable game. The Marlins have undergone a roster deconstruction this off-season and more players could still be traded.

Losing to a college can be a little embarrassing for a big-league team, but it has happened before. With college teams well into their schedule and big-league teams first beginning, there is an opportunity for the schools. Even though this is a meaningless exhibition game, there figures to be interest in the contest. After a busy and controversial off-season, the Marlins figure to continue to make headlines and their play will be watched closely.

Christian Yelich who almost played for the Hurricanes may not be at Marlins Park for this game. Yelich has been a hot name in trade rumors and the team has reportedly talked with multiple teams. While it would likely take a large haul to move Yelich, the Marlins could find a suitable partner. It is unlikely that the Marlins will compete in the near future and Yelich appears to have a desire to compete.

The Marlins will begin the exhibition schedule on Feb. 23rd against the St. Louis Cardinals.
