Norland High School Students Arrested Over Loaded Gun in School Appear in Court

The four students who were arrested at Norland High School in Miami over a loaded gun found on campus, appeared in court on Saturday.

The students were arrested and charged with possession of a gun on school property Friday. The judge ordered that all students remain in secure detention.

Outside of the courtroom a mother's eyes filled with tears and questions. She did not want to share her name, but says the punishment does not fit the crime for her 15-year-old daughter.

"I don't have any guns at my house and she knows the severity of that," the mother said. "So for them to try an pin it on her, that's not right. All them boys, she's the only girl. It just doesn't sit well with me."

The school at 1193 Northwest 193rd Street was temporarily placed on lockdown while officials searched the school for any other possible weapons.

A tip received through the "See Something, Say Something" program initially informed police about the gun. School Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho tweeted, commending the student who made the anonymous call.

In total, five students - two males and three females - were brought in for questioning, including Sabrina Placide. She says she handled the backpack that carried the gun.

"They told me to pass it and I didn't know what was inside of it, so I just passed it," Placide said.

That's all it took for police to pull Placide into the office in their search to find the students responsible.

"This boy had a gun in his bookbag, the police came and took him, he gave the bag to another boy and they started checking people's book bags," Placide said.

On Saturday evening, one parent is asking for justice for her child.

"I feel like my daughter shouldn't be there," the parent said. "She didn't bring no weapon to school."

We are not releasing their names or showing their faces because they are minors.
