Palm Beach County Rescue Group Aims to Save Dogs From Being Eaten at Festival in China

What to Know

A South Florida animal rescue group is raising funds to help bring hundreds of dogs from China to avoid them being slaughtered for a major dog meat festival scheduled to start next week.

The Big Dog Ranch Rescue, based out of Palm Beach County, told NBC affiliate WPTV-TV that they have already saved around 300 dogs from being killed and eaten as part of the annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival that is scheduled to begin on June 21st.

โ€œThat is a 10-day event in their culture that is pure hell for the animals,โ€ adoptions manager Debbie Hilton told the station. โ€œThis is time sensitive and we need your help.โ€

The group, which is scheduling a fourth trip to the country, says they need to raise thousands of dollars to create space at a facility in China that is already at capacity to hold the animals until they can be adopted.

โ€œThey are boiling them alive; they are skinning them alive; they believe the more horrible the death, the more adrenaline released into the meat and better for them the consumer,โ€ Hilton said. โ€œIt is just dreadful.โ€
