Palmetto Express Lanes Cause Traffic Confusion

There was a traffic jam of red brake lights on the Palmetto Expressway Monday morning as drivers tried to navigate some new express lane poles.

Over the weekend construction crews worked to install the bright plastic poles from 154th to Okeechobee Road, dividing the main lanes from the express lanes.

The Florida Department of Transportation Says the road is being monitored as they have six emergency vehicles in the area and could add more Tuesday.

The rest of poles will be installed in the southbound lanes by early August.

"It is anticipated that they will reach Flagler around the first week in August and at that time the express lanes will open with toll collection," said Marta Rodriguez of FDOT.

FDOT says the tolls will be a minimum of 50 cents per segment but will vary based on the level of traffic congestion.

When the Palmetto express lanes are opened, the entry points to the southbound lanes will be:

Going northbound, you can enter at three locations -

- Between W. Flagler street and 836

- Between NW 36th Street and NW 58th Street, between Okeechobee Road and NW 103rd Street

You can exit north of NW 154th Street or by connecting to I-75 express lanes.

Now if you're going southbound, it's the reverse. You can enter:

- Just north of NW 154th Street

- Or by connecting directly from the I-75 express lanes.

The exit locations are -

- Between NW 103rd Street and Okeechobee Road.

- Between NW 58th Street and NW 36th Street.

- Between 836 / Dolphin Expressway and West Flagler Street.
