Yards and streets still soaked with raw sewage following rupture

Gloria Pall, the sultry hostess of a 1950s Los Angeles TV show that was canceled because her character’s sexy poses and flirtatious comments were deemed too hot for television, has died.

A day after a sewer main rupture flooded streets in Hollywood, Pembroke Pines and other areas of Broward, residents were still dealing with sewage soaked yards and streets.

"It smells like death, it's horrible," Sandra Clark, whose yard was flooded with sewage, said Wednesday. "I can't even begin to describe the smell, it's awful."

Not only is the smell sickening, but the sewage causing it also poses a safety hazard. Residents are being asked to stay away from the sewage, and avoid long showers, dishwashing, and doing laundry to prevent a stronger flow.

It all began around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning, when construction crews accidentally struck a sewer main sending thousands of gallons of sewage gushing into neighborhoods.

"We're doing what we can direct flow away," said Hollywood City Spokeswoman Raelin Storey.

Clean-up crews started sandbagging diverting sewage from homes soon after the spill Wednesday. Approximately 20 homes located east of North 31st Road were evacuated and the city put the residents up in local hotels.

Near the scene of the main break, on Taft Street between Park Road and I-95, the YMCA facility and Rotary park were contaminated by the smelly sludge and will remain closed until further notice.

Once the flow has been contained and clean-up has been completed, the impacted areas will be disinfected. The process could be complete as early as Thursday.
